Why you should see this quirky magic and sex show in Manchester

A chat with Kathryn Haywood as she brings comedy, magic, and a touch of sex to the Greater Manchester Fringe Festival

Kathryn’s first step into performance was anything but typical. Her debut role? The front end of a pantomime horse in Hong Kong. It’s certainly a unique start to a stage career, but that was just the beginning.

The birth of Magic and Sex

The idea for her latest show grew from Kathryn’s love for magic. Having already performed a show called YOGA & SEX…for women (over 40), she decided to bring that character back in a new setting. “I love magic and I really wanted to learn how to do it,” she says. “I already had the character from my previous show, and we thought it would be fun to see her try something new. Turns out, she’s quite good at it!”

Why should you see Magic and Sex?

If you’re torn between the many shows at the Fringe, Kathryn has a straightforward pitch: “If you like magic, you’ll be happy. If you like comedy, you’ll be happy. If you like sex, you’ll be disappointed!”

But don’t just take her word for it. Kathryn has already received glowing feedback: “The most original use of magic I have ever seen!” says magician Sid Ozalid. And from We Love Brighton: “I don’t know how she did it, and it’s driving me insane.”

The joy of performing

Kathryn thrives on the unpredictable nature of live performance, particularly because of the audience interaction. “Each show is different depending on who’s watching,” she explains. “I love that I always have to be on my toes. Making people laugh is just the best feeling ever!”

A quirky CV

When it comes to the strangest job on her resume, Kathryn has a few fun stories to tell. “I was once the voice of a small cartoon poo in an educational video about constipation. I had to say, ‘Let me out! Let me out!’” she laughs. She also worked as a weather anchor for an English-language TV station in Hong Kong—“until I got the sack. But that’s a whole other story. New show idea!”

The importance of fringe theatre

For Kathryn, fringe theatre is crucial. “For creatives, it’s really the only way to get your stuff out there,” she says. “For audiences, it’s a brilliant way to see raw talent up close. I’d much rather sit in a tiny fringe venue and see everything in detail than be stuck in a huge venue squinting to make out what’s going on.”

Don’t miss your tickets

Kathryn’s return to Manchester is one she’s eagerly anticipating. After a successful run last year at the Greater Manchester Fringe with YOGA & SEX, which earned her an Offie nomination, she’s excited to return to the city that gave her such a warm reception. “Manchester is a great city, so I’m looking forward to coming back and seeing what’s going on this summer,” she shares.

Unlock Sexual Alchemy: Supercharge Your Life Force

Sexual alchemy is like turning your sexual energy into super fuel for your mind, spirit, and life goals. Instead of just chasing physical pleasure, you harness that powerful spark—think of it as raw life force, similar to “kundalini” in yoga or “chi” in Taoism—to boost creativity, confidence, and even attract what you want. For example, ancient Tantric lovers would build arousal through slow touch and breathwork, circling energy up the spine for deep connection without rushing to finish.
